What does ChemSelect do?
We use chemicals almost every day.
They're in our homes.
They're also present in workplaces.
Some of these chemicals can harm us or the environment.
You want to identify safe chemicals.
You can do that with ChemSelect.
Individual chemicals are called "substances."
Several of these substances mixed together are called "mixtures."
Many substances have very complex and long names.
That's why almost every substance has a number or several numbers.
The "CAS number" is valid for a substance worldwide.
Particularly dangerous substances have been placed on a list by authorities.
Here in ChemSelect, you need to do the following:
- Type in the name and number of the substance
- Type in the hazardous properties
- Answer questions about what to do with the chemicals
- Answer other questions about the substance
There's often a help button with a question mark on it.
This makes it easier to answer questions.
In many places in ChemSelect, expert knowledge is required.
Sometimes you need to know exactly:
How the chemical is used.
Or what it is used for.
Operation
At the beginning, you select your own language.
At the very top of the page, you'll always find the topics you can click on.
You can click on "Substances" there.
Then you'll get a list.
You can click on a substance in the list.
Then you'll get a list on the left side with the topics.
It's almost the same for mixtures.
A result will be displayed at the very end.
This is intended to help you choose a chemical.
It is supposed to be better for people and nature.
Colors and numbers
The results always have the colors of a traffic light and a number.
- Red is bad and has the number 5
- Yellow is medium and has the number 3
- Green is best and has the number 1
- For pink, not enough input was received for a correct rating (number 4)
- For gray, nothing was entered at all (number -1)
- Sometimes you didn't have to type anything at all. Then it becomes light blue (number -2).
